Vontae Daley-Campbell’s CV contains one of those details that makes a new name easier to place: a full 90 minutes on his Leicester City debut in a 1-0 FA Cup win over Brighton. Southend are signing the player several chapters later, as a 25-year-old wing-back with experience gathered across England and Scotland.
He joins on a one-year deal after his Chesterfield contract expired. Southend also note that Daley-Campbell worked with Kieron Dyer earlier in his career, making this a reunion at Roots Hall. Familiarity is useful context, although it should not be mistaken for a promise about selection.
Academy grounding and senior miles
Daley-Campbell came through the Arsenal academy before joining Leicester City in 2019. He represented England through the youth age groups, including England under-19 level, and made that senior Leicester debut against Brighton in February 2021.
A loan at Dundee followed, bringing Scottish Premiership football into his record. Later spells included Cardiff City and Peterborough United before he joined Chesterfield in 2024.
The two clubs publish different totals for his Chesterfield appearances, so there is no value in pretending one precise number is settled. The safe and useful record is that he spent two seasons with the Spireites before leaving at the end of his contract. Southend report three assists during 2025/26.
That path gives him experience of academy development, a Premier League club’s senior environment, cup football, a Scottish loan and EFL squads. It does not tell Southend exactly how to use him. It does explain why a reunion with Dyer is more than two strangers sharing a signing photograph.
A fresh chance at Roots Hall
Southend describe Daley-Campbell as a wing-back. Chesterfield called him a full-back when he arrived there. We can leave the whiteboard to the head coach and stick to the firmer point: he adds another senior option on the flank to a group still being assembled.
The one-year agreement also gives the move a clear horizon. Daley-Campbell has a season in which to turn his varied background into a Southend contribution, while the club gets a player the head coach already knows.
There is enough in the record to make the signing interesting without decorating it with guarantees. The FA Cup debut is a fine calling card; the next meaningful line has to be written in a Southend shirt.
