Southend have added 19-year-old goalkeeper Joe Duncan on a season-long loan from Bristol City. The full-campaign agreement gives him time to train, compete and build on the senior experience he has already gathered away from his parent club.
Duncan also arrives with a glimpse of the following he is joining. Southend’s announcement says he watched the Blues at Wembley before making the move, an introduction to the club that few new signings receive from the stands.
Southend have not named a first-choice goalkeeper in the announcement. Duncan joins the group with a season in which to make his case.
From Bristol’s academy to senior football
Duncan joined Bristol City’s academy at under-11 level and progressed through to the under-21 group. He signed professional terms in 2023, while Farnborough’s profile records that his Bristol City contract runs to the summer of 2027.
His development has not been confined to academy football. A senior loan at Tiverton Town was followed by a spell with Farnborough during 2025/26. Those moves took him beyond age-group matches and into first-team environments, with unfamiliar grounds and points at stake.
That route is useful preparation for Southend. Academy coaching provides the technical base; loan football asks a young goalkeeper to apply it around senior players and live results. Duncan now gets another full season to continue that progression at Roots Hall.
A season to make his case
The length of the agreement is the important detail. This is not a short emergency spell measured in a handful of weekends. Duncan can work with Southend’s coaches throughout 2026/27 and compete across the same calendar as the rest of the squad.
For supporters, the starting picture is straightforward: a young Bristol City goalkeeper, developed there from under-11 level, with senior spells at Tiverton and Farnborough behind him. His Southend connection began at Wembley; his contribution now has a full season to develop on the pitch.
