Southend United Ladies 1-2 Enfield Town: Stone keeps hope alive in goal

Southend United Ladies lost 1-2 to Enfield Town at Garon Park and remain on six points from four league matches. Leyton Orient are next.

Southend United Ladies recovered once against Enfield Town but could not do it again. A 1-2 defeat at Garon Park ended with Hannah Stone keeping the chance of a point alive in goal.

Abbie Rex headed Chelise Fleming’s shot over before a goalless interval. Jasmine Cox put Enfield ahead after the restart from an uncleared cross, and Amber Denton went off injured. Isobel Boyd won the penalty Darcy Drewitt converted after 59 minutes; five minutes later, Cox struck from distance.

Stone had come off the bench at half-time and had a shot saved before replacing the injured Molly Lee after 85 minutes. Her previous goalkeeping experience proved valuable as she denied Cox and Fleming.

Twelve added minutes offered time for another reply, but Southend created no clear opening. Stone kept the deficit at one; Southend could not turn her saves into the second equaliser they needed.

Four games in

The defeat leaves Southend fifth with six points from four league games. Wins over Hertford and Wormley are balanced by defeats against Chelmsford and Enfield, with six goals scored and six conceded.

Next up

Southend visit unbeaten Leyton Orient on Sunday 20 September, kicking off at 2pm UK time at Cheshunt FC. Orient have seven points from three games and have conceded only once.
